Alkaline Diet – What is it?

The alkaline diet is based on the idea that the foods you eat can change your body’s pH and make it more “alkaline” instead of “acidic”.

Core idea: Eat more foods that leave an “alkaline ash” after digestion, eat less foods that leave “acidic ash”.

1. Foods in Alkaline Diet 🥦
Eat More – “Alkaline foods”:

  • Veggies: Spinach, kale, broccoli, cucumber, carrot, beetroot
  • Fruits: Lemon, watermelon, apple, berries, avocado – yes lemon is acidic but becomes alkaline after digestion
  • Nuts/Seeds: Almonds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds
  • Other: Green tea, herbal tea, tofu, olive oil

Eat Less/Avoid – “Acidic foods”:

  • Processed food: Chips, packaged snacks, cold drinks
  • Animal protein: Red meat, processed meat, dairy in excess
  • Grains: White bread, white rice, maida
  • Sugar: Refined sugar, sweets, desserts
  • Other: Coffee, alcohol, artificial sweeteners

2. How it “helps” with Sugar & BP
Important: Your blood pH is tightly controlled by kidneys/lungs Food can’t change blood pH much. But the diet indirectly helps .

For Blood Sugar:

  1. Low Glycemic Load: Alkaline diet cuts white rice, maida, sugar. More fiber from veggies slows sugar absorption → less blood sugar spikes
  2. Weight loss: High veggie + low processed food = fewer calories. Less weight = better insulin sensitivity.
  3. Magnesium + Potassium: Spinach, almonds, avocado are high in these minerals → helps insulin work better.

For Blood Pressure:

  1. Less Sodium: You cut processed food, chips, pickles. High sodium = high BP.
  2. More Potassium: Banana, spinach, beetroot are potassium-rich. Potassium balances sodium → BP drops.
  3. Nitrates: Beetroot, leafy greens → convert to nitric oxide → blood vessels relax → BP lowers.

3. What Science Actually Says

  1. No proof that it “alkalizes” your blood. Your body does that automatically.
  2. Indirect benefit is real: Because it’s basically a whole-food, plant-based, low-sodium, low-sugar diet. And that is proven to help diabetes + hypertension.

Bottom line: Don’t think “alkaline pH = cure”. Think “more veggies, less sugar/processed food = better sugar + BP”.

Caution: Don’t cut all protein/dairy without doctor advice. Diabetics should check blood sugar when changing diet.
